Russia: Vast diamond field containing ‘trillions of carats’ discovered

Russia revealed the discovery of a vast diamond deposit in 2012, which contains “trillions of carats” of high-grade industrial diamonds.
This deposit, located in the Popigai crater in Siberia, was first discovered in the 1970s but remained classified for decades.
The diamonds, formed by a meteorite impact 35 million years ago, are twice as hard as regular diamonds and have significant industrial applications.
The discovery was declassified in the early 2010s, and Russian scientists claimed that the reserves could meet the world’s demand for industrial-grade diamonds for the next 3,000 years.
The deposit was kept secret during the Soviet era, as the USSR was already producing large quantities of diamonds and had invested heavily in synthetic diamond production.
The potential impact of this discovery on global diamond markets was considered significant, although the remote location of the deposit poses challenges for extraction and transportation.
