Modern democracy, even within democratic nations, has often devolved into a political spectacle where the highest offices are held by rather peculiar individuals. For instance, in upcoming U.S. elections, voters may feel they are choosing between “bad” and “very bad” options. This sentiment is acknowledged by many, including Republican and Democratic leaders. The political structure seems to be such that even popular figures like Nikki Haley, who is backed by influential supporters, face slim chances of entering the White House. This raises questions about the nature of democracy when ordinary citizens, who lack such backing, seem to stand no chance at all.

From May 27 to June 1, there will be a gathering in Geneva that is causing concern among some individuals. They fear that an unelected and unaccountable figure could be granted an unprecedented level of global authority, with the power to declare emergencies, mandate vaccines, and vaccine passports. This figure could also have the authority to shut down factories, halt global trade, and censor dissenting opinions.

Twenty-four governors are expressing concerns about a pandemic agreement that, according to them, would grant the World Health Organization’s Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, extensive authority during emergencies.

In their correspondence to President Joe Biden, they argue that he should refrain from endorsing the agreement as it could empower the WHO to proclaim a global health emergency, potentially obligating the United States to implement quarantines and vaccination mandates.

Negotiations are ongoing among health officials from the WHO’s 194 member states regarding the agreement’s text, aimed at enhancing collaboration to combat future pathogens following the millions of deaths caused by the coronavirus.

This agreement, which updates existing health regulations concerning outbreaks and introduces a new binding legal treaty, is expected to be finalized during the World Health Assembly scheduled from May 27 to June 1 in Geneva, Switzerland.

This could represent the most significant expansion of the agency’s authority since it was established in 1948.

Governors, including Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas, argue that it would “erode national sovereignty, encroach on states’ rights, and endanger freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.”

“The intent of these measures is to strengthen the WHO, particularly its unchecked director-general, to limit the rights of U.S. citizens,” stated the letter dated May 22.

According to the agreement, Americans might lose fundamental “freedoms such as free speech, privacy, travel, choice of medical care, and informed consent, thus breaching the core tenets of our Constitution,” the governors assert.

Rather than U.S. legislators determining health care policies during an emergency, Tedros would have the authority to dictate actions to U.S. citizens, as mentioned in the letter.

The letter stated, “Public health policy is a domain reserved for individual states, rather than the federal government, and definitely not for international entities like the WHO.”

Nations and peoples have sacrificed millions of lives over centuries, asserting that outsiders have no right to dictate their fate. This is the right that Ukrainians are defending now, to ensure that no outsider can control their lives or dictate their actions.

Yet, a shift has occurred on planet Earth. Instead of challenging the actions of organizations like the UN and WHO, there seems to be a consensus, a readiness to entrust them with the keys to peace.
