Human bases on Mars: what will Elon Musk’s Noah’s Ark and other colonists’ dwellings look like

Elon Musk intends to create a Martian colony for 1 million people, and other companies from different countries have also presented their futuristic human base projects.

The space race with the participation of billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson gives rise to active exploration not only of near-Earth space, but also paves the way for the settlement of Mars. 

For example, Elon Musk said that by 2050 he wants to create a colony on the Red Planet with a population of 1 million people. What will the human base look like so that people can live on Mars? This question is answered by several companies that presented their conceptual projects of the colonizer base, according to the Daily Mail.

Mars Dune Alpha

The US company ICON presented its concept of a Martian house called Mars Dune Alpha, which is currently being built at the Lyndon Johnson Space Center in Texas. This fully 3D-printed building will have a seating area, a gym and a growing area. 

This building will simulate life on Mars for one year and will begin implementation in the fall of 2022. For 12 months, for three missions, 12 people will live and work in this room.

During the experiment, the mission will try to survive in the limited resources that future colonists will face on Mars, solve problems with equipment failures, communication delays and other factors of the hostile “Martian” environment.

“This is the highest quality human imitation ever created,” ICON co-founder Jason Ballard said.

According to Ballard, Mars Dune Alpha will be able to prepare people for life on another planet.

Mars base alpha

Elon Musk announced this project of a real Martian colony three years ago and last week, Musk announced the delivery of a “futuristic Noah’s Ark” to Mars, although scientists responded by saying it was impossible.

“One of the main tasks is to build a self-sufficient city on Mars and bring animals from Earth. It will be like Noah’s Ark,” Musk said.

Images posted by Mask on Twitter show the latest Starship – Super Heavy booster, which is located on Mars near the human base. According to the founder of SpaceX, such a base can be built in 2028.

Mars Case

The Mars Case project was created by the Chinese company Open Architecture in partnership with technology giant Xiaomi. It is a compact, self-contained apartment measuring only 2.4 m long, 2.4 m wide and 2 m high.

Inside there is a main living area, something like a bathroom, a desk, a few chairs and a pantry. Smartphones can be used to control devices and other functions such as lighting in this house.

Mars Base 1

Another Martian home project is presented by the Chinese company C-Space called Mars Base 1. It is also known as Mars Camp. This room, which will simulate life on Mars, was built in the Chinese Gobi Desert. It is a complex with an area of ​​53,330 square meters. 

This base consists of a dome and 9 modules, including living quarters, a control room, a greenhouse for growing plants and an airlock. This base can accommodate up to 60 people at a time.

Swiss project

Scientists from the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Lausanne have also developed a base project on Mars. According to scientists, the research base will consist of three different modules. The central room will be 12.5 m high and 5 m in diameter.

Mars Incubator

The Mars Incubator project was presented by the US company New Haven in Connecticut. This base consists of four connected modules, the largest of which will contain bunk beds, a kitchen, a bathroom, a laboratory and a seating area.

British project

London-based architectural firm Foster + Partners presented its vision of life on Mars. The architects showed images of houses printed on a 3D printer and automated vehicles that will one day appear on Mars. 

Houses with an area of ​​93 square meters, which can accommodate up to four astronauts, will be built using regolith, soil and stones found on the surface of Mars.
