There are many speculations about the secret bases built by the Germans in Antarctica, but unlike them, an underground city in the Greenland glaciers actually existed.
The base in the ice was built by the military in the strictest secrecy, by chance it revealed itself when the ice began to melt and some of the Ice Worm’s structures became visible.
As conceived by the creators, the base should have existed for at least 100 years. Construction work, despite the cover of secrecy, was very difficult – many load-bearing structures of under-ice tunnels were imprinted into the ice. They made it possible to create the rigidity necessary for a military facility, because the glaciers are constantly moving.
Along with tunnels and underground halls, many wells were drilled in the ice, which became ballistic missile silos. The US military was confident that the location of the base in Greenland would be an advantage if the Cold War escalated.
Later, several photos of the construction leaked from the archives. They show how the metal base of mines and tunnels is immersed in ice.
From above, the tunnels were masked with a thick layer of snow. But in the end, the climate played a cruel joke – with the rise in temperature in the Arctic, it melted and exposed the lining of the tunnels.
As soon as the object was discovered, the military decided to mothball and dismantle the ballistic arsenal. A little excursion:
So, instead of the planned 100 years, the base existed for a little more than twenty. In addition, the change of doctrine also played a role – nuclear submarines gave a greater effect of surprise than a secret, but still static object.
