Survivable nations in Nuclear Conflict: Which countries would endure?

Survivable nations in Nuclear Conflict: Which countries would endure? 1

Scientists have identified countries whose inhabitants might be fortunate enough to survive a nuclear war. Researchers from the University of Otago evaluated various risks and determined which states have the best chances, particularly those capable of sustaining agriculture.

A significant challenge would be enduring the lack of sunlight due to ash clouds following large-scale explosions. The resulting reduction in sunny days would create severe hardships.

A hypothetical large-scale nuclear war between Russia and NATO could release approximately 150 teragrams of soot into the atmosphere. This would drastically affect global agricultural production, leading to an 80% decline worldwide and a total collapse in the Northern Hemisphere within a few years.

Island and peninsula nations such as New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands are particularly well-positioned to endure these harsh conditions.

New Zealand could potentially survive a nuclear winter due to its robust food supply and advantageous geography. However, the country faces risks from trade dependency and energy imports. A temperature drop of just one degree could add 15 to 50 additional frost days.

Australia benefits from an oversupply of food production, making it relatively safer. Yet, this safety depends on the continent not being a target in a nuclear war.

Iceland is also favorably located and may suffer less from climate impacts compared to continental Europe. It has abundant hydroelectric power, agricultural expertise, and fish stocks. Nevertheless, as a NATO member, it could be a target.

The Solomon Islands and Vanuatu benefit from their geographic location, tropical climate, and food production. However, they face risks from tsunamis and energy crises.

Other experts, like survival specialist Alex Reiba, have suggested additional countries that might endure a nuclear conflict. These include Canada, with its vast territory and dispersed population, and Norway, known for its small population and relative isolation.

Sweden, Greenland (Denmark), the Fiji Islands, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are also considered safer options.

There are other countries that might survive a nuclear war beyond those mentioned, either due to their remoteness or political stability and recovery capabilities. Regardless of where you are, always watch for disaster signs and seek bomb shelters immediately.

Yet, a nuclear war is not inevitable. The newly elected U.S. President has stated that he will not allow such a conflict, emphasizing his role as a ‘peacemaker.’
