Light of distant planets: The Vatican has unveiled its new mascot, an anime figure named Luce

In these challenging times, it’s common for everyone to engage audiences in the best way possible, hence the Holy Fathers’ decision to reach out with cartoons is understandable.

In an effort to engage the youth, the Vatican has chosen a mascot depicted as a girl in a yellow cloak, with mud-stained boots and a pilgrim’s cross.

The Vatican has introduced its mascot for 2025, an anime character named Luce, meaning “Light” in Italian. This character is set to make her first appearance at the Lucca Comics and Games convention, an esteemed event in Italy celebrating comics, video games, and fantasy. According to Vatican News, the Vatican’s Diocese for Evangelization is hosting an event titled “Lucy and Friends.”

Luce’s yellow cape has already been seen as a reference to the Vatican flag, where gold and silver colors predominate. The girl’s dirty boots, as fans suggest, symbolize a long and difficult journey, and her staff – “a pilgrimage to eternity.”

“I’m surprised they chose a girl ,” Reddit users write.

The “Little Pilgrim” is expected to become the symbol of the Papal Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, themed “Beauty Brings Hope.”

Anime’s interaction with religion is not new. The industry has often drawn inspiration from Catholicism, producing series like Trinity Blood and Hellsing Ultimate. Anime frequently incorporates ecclesiastical orders, such as the Vatican Miracle Examiner. Beyond Catholicism, anime has a history of religious engagement, with titles like In the Beginning: Bible Stories and Superbook originating in the 1980s and 1990s.

The choice of ‘Luce,’ reminiscent of ‘Lucifero,’ for an Italian female name raises questions. Similarly, the naming of the Arizona telescope as ‘LUCIFER’ is curious.

Since we are dealing with the center of Catholicism, one very important character of mythology comes to mind in connection with “light”. Wikipedia writes the following about him: “Lucifer (Latin Lucifer – “light-bearer”; from lux – “light”, and fero – “I carry”) – in Roman mythology, the personification of the morning star – the planet Venus.”

It should be noted that in early Christianity the word “morning star” (and its multilingual synonyms, such as Lucifer, Eosphorus, Dennitsa) was used as a glorifying epithet. In the Revelation of John the Evangelist, the “morning star” was an epithet of Jesus Christ. And only in the Late Middle Ages did “Lucifer” and “Satan” become equivalent concepts. This happened as a result of the allegorical interpretation of verse 14:12 of the Book of Prophet Isaiah, where the comparison of the Babylonian king with the morning star began to imply Satan.

But, in our case, since we are talking about a girl, it may seem at first glance that this parallel does not particularly resonate. However, this is only at first glance, since the planet Venus is designated by the sign ♀, which in turn also symbolizes the feminine principle. In addition, the shells reflected in Lucy’s eyes are not only a symbol of pilgrimage, but are also associated with the myth of the birth of Venus. This plot is depicted in the famous painting by Botticelli “The Birth of Venus”.

Now let’s remember who this beautiful Goddess is. “Venus (Latin venus, genitive veneris “carnal love”) is the goddess of beauty, carnal love, desire, fertility and prosperity in Roman mythology.”

In Greek mythology, she corresponds to Aphrodite, who, according to Wikipedia, in turn is similar to Ishtar. Ishtar is the central female deity of Akkadian mythology: the goddess of fertility and carnal love, as well as war and strife, an astral deity (the personification of the planet Venus).

Since the ancients believed that Venus, visible best in the morning and evening, are two different stars, the celestial body had two names. The male is Astar, or “morning star”, and the female is Astarte, or “evening star”.

In some Semitic cultures, in particular, the Sumero-Akkadian, the two aspects of Venus merged into a single mythological character. Therefore, the goddess Ishtar is characterized by androgyny – signs of both male and female genders. It is believed that Ishtar, among other things, was the patroness of prostitutes, hetaerae and homosexuals. She was also the Lady of Babylon. Ishtar could often be accompanied by wild animals, among which there is a wolf. Isn’t that where Lucy’s dog Santino comes from?

This is an interesting symbol that the Vatican offers in connection with 2025. Many would like to understand what they wanted to say with this?

Perhaps the dirt on the boots indicates that he (she) is already here on Earth? And who is this he (she) really?

In his 1936 work “Wotan,” Carl Gustav Jung described the rise of Hitler’s Nazism, stating: “Wotan the traveler awoke. He manifested in the world modestly, at sect gatherings among common folk in Northern Germany, where discussions about Christ on a white horse occurred. It is uncertain if these individuals recognize the ancient association of Wotan with the figures of Christ or Dionysus, but it seems improbable.”

Despite the implications, the selection of Luce as a symbol for 2025 is intriguing. It prompts speculation about the potential for significant global changes next year, keeping observers alert for any developments. Will the New World Order be launched in its entirety next year? If that’s the case, then WW3 and Pandemic 2.0 should start and end earlier than expected.
