Robert Morton had been browsing a satellite map of Edinburgh when he spotted a submerged plane offshore.
Situated just off the coast of the Scottish capital, the aircraft seemed fully intact yet appeared to be sitting just beneath the surface of the ocean, as though it had crash-landed and sunk.
The discovery generated some heated debate on social media with Internet users arguing over whether there really was a plane there or not.
“I was just looking on Google Earth on Monday and, by chance, I came across the picture of the aircraft,” said Morton. “It looks like it is the sea, just off the coast of Edinburgh.”
“It looks like it is underwater.”
Inevitably, however, the sighting turned out to have a rather mundane explanation.
“In short, each satellite image you see on the map is actually a compilation of several images,” a spokesman for Google explained.
“Fast-moving objects like planes often show up in only one of the many images we use for a given area.”
