Apocalyptic insect invasion at Muslim shrine during Ramadan shocked believers just as it happened before the pandemic

The celebration of Ramadan by pilgrims who came to Mecca was interrupted by a nightmarish invasion of insects. Black grasshoppers, cockroaches, locusts and other living creatures literally attacked thousands of Muslims. People covered their faces and heads as best they could so that annoying insects would not interfere with their prayers.

“They suddenly appear between the Isha prayer and sunrise, and no one knows where they came from. We are all working tirelessly to put an end to this invasion and not cause inconvenience to believers, pilgrims and tourists,” Fahd-al, an official from the two Holy Mosques (Al-Haram in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina) told the Saudi Gazette.

However, believers are unhappy, because instead of enjoying prayers, they are forced to “fight” with uninvited “guests”. There are also accusations against local authorities of negligence.

According to some data, the cause of the appearance of hordes of insects was unseasonal rain, according to others, sewer manholes and drains.

A video posted on the Mecca region’s official Twitter page shows pilgrims performing tawaf as Muslims circumambulate the Kaaba, while others took a moment to stand in the rain and pray in front of the Kaaba.

To calm the pilgrims and local residents, the authorities hired an additional team of cleaners, distributed pesticides to control insects. Invited entomologists cannot yet give an explanation on what caused the invasion.

Many saw an omen in the invasion of insects in the holy month for Muslims, and especially in Mecca. Netizens could not fail to see what is happening to biblical analogies.

“The next misfortune should be the descent of darkness”, “This is how we will fight enemies in life,” users commented on the videos from Mecca, which scattered across social networks.

By the way, many people believed that insects had magical powers, and for some, the grasshopper, scarab, and butterfly became totems. Sacred texts reveal the meanings of insects. So, for example, bees, since they carry honey, symbolize fertility and spring. The Bushmen of the Kalahari desert believed that praying mantises can look into the soul and predict the future, and in general were once people. And all thanks to the fact that they can turn their heads, looking around and back, stand on their hind legs and work with their front legs like hands, just like a person. They even wash like people. And they also know how to look at everything behind their amazing eyes.

On the opposite, locusts in particular are not credited with anything positive. In legends, this insect is regarded as God’s punishment, devastation, a symbol of illness and hatred. In ancient times, people were afraid of the invasion of these hungry insects, which literally covered the sky and devoured everything that came their way.

A similar locust invasion struck Mecca in January 2019, after which a pandemic began in China and then we all know the story’s continuation.

The end of 2018 was marked by a series of unprecedented climate events that affected Saudi Arabia, where, after heavy rainfall unthinkable for a desert, grass thickets suddenly appeared.

The situation itself looked extremely strange and inexplicable by any climatology, however, what most struck the inhabitants of the Middle East – all this is reflected in detail in Muslim eschatology. That is, all these floods, snow and the appearance of grass in the desert are direct signs of the Apocalypse, as written in Muslim holy books. To complete the picture, only the clouds of black locust devouring Mecca, the main city of the Muslim world, were missing.

Although the rains in Saudi Arabia are already pure apocalyptic, nevertheless, with all the anomalies with the weather last year, there were an order of magnitude fewer insects, as well as in 2021 and 2020.

Therefore, it is no coincidence that the Arab media try not to focus the attention of Muslims on the event, because every Bedouin knows that the invasion of locusts and toads is not a very good prognostic sign for future events.

It is obvious that the world will face another round of end of days scenarios in the coming year, if not earlier.
